New treatment priorities, technical support rather than direct service delivery
Catholic Relief Services hosted a meeting in Lusaka , Zambia, of representatives of the AIDSRelief treatment programme that was funded by a PEPFAR grant to Catholic Relief Services from 2004. With funding cuts, and with new priorities around the provision of ARV treatment, the programme is being ‘transitioned’ to the Department of Health in each country. PEPFAR’s support is becoming more technical, and direct service delivery is being increasingly taken over by in-county programmes.
Sr Alison Munro gave a broad presentation of what has been accomplished under the grant to CRS in South Africa, and under an extension of the grant to the SACBC AIDS Office. Since 2004 more than 51 000 people were initiated on treatment.
