Capuchin students, Pretoria, May 2012

The SACBC AIDS Office conducted a seminar for Capuchin philosophy and theology students in Pretoria, in May 2012.  The students studying for the priesthood are from Mozambique, Madagascar, Kenya, Zambia and South Africa, and will shortly be doing a pastoral ministry placement in various hospice and AIDS facilities.

They raised questions on HIV and AIDS for discussion related to transmission of the virus, the care of the sick, and precautions against infection.  With the help of reflection on scripture passages related to the healing ministry of Jesus, they examined  attitudes of the sick, of nursing staff, of family members, and of themselves towards the challenges posed by AIDS, and noted the possibilities for stigma, discrimination, prejudice, judgement of others.

In small groups they also shared personal experiences of HIV and AIDS in their own families and among friends.
