Bicycles for Ahanang caregivers in Sebokeng, Archdiocese of Johannesburg (Submitted by Nondumiso Jwara, SACBC AIDS Office)

On the 31st of May 2012 the SACBC AIDS Office presented two bicycles to Ahanang Home Based Care project in Sebokeng Zone 14 donated by the SACBC Justice and Peace Department  to the AIDS Office. The bicycles had been ridden from Musina to Durban during COP 17 in November 2011. The project operates in this township and  in neighbouring squatter camps. The caregivers have to walk more than 20km to reach some of their clients and the public transport system is inefficient and not affordable.

On the day eight caregivers, parish priest Fr Patrick Noonan and site coordinator, Ms Sefora Vilakazi were present. The group was happy to receive the bicycles for carers and the winter hampers of blankets and tracksuits for children as extra donations from the SACBC AIDS Office. Caregivers will share the bicycles amongst themselves during home visits. The bicycles will be kept at the house of the parish priest  for security.
