Early detection of TB, Zanethemba, Madadeni parish, Diocese of Dundee, April 2012
Johan Viljoen (back row), of the SACBC AIDS Office visited Zanethemba project operating out of the Regina Coeli parish in Madadeni, Newcastle in the diocese of Dundee to assist the staff and caregivers with the implementation of the new early detection of TB programme which started in April.
Patients and the people with whom they live are screened if TB is suspected, and then referred for follow up testing and possible treatment. HIV/TB co-infection is a major problem in South Africa, but TB is treatable. Often, however, people present themselves to health facilities very late, sometimes having infected others with TB which is far more easily transmitted to others than is HIV.
The particular programme is implemented with funding from the British Government in several places, including the dioceses of Queenstown, Dundee and Kroonstad.
