Mandela Day: Inkomazi Orphans Help Their Neighbours
– Johan Viljoen
The SACBC Aids Office “Houses for Orphans” program has been exceptionally successful in the Inkomazi District of Mpumalanga – more than 15 houses have been built there, for orphan headed households and for elderly grandparents looking after their orphaned grandchildren. Of particular concern is the plight of orphans being cared for by widowed grandfathers – a grandfather clearly does not have the maternal touch that a grandmother has. Consequently these households are often dirty and the orphans neglected.
To celebrate the Mandela Day call to help the less fortunate, orphans who received houses from SACBC Aids Office in Inkomazi decided to do something to help – they went to the houses built by SACBC for elderly grandfathers caring for orphans, and cleaned them up. Houses were cleaned inside and outside, and yards were swept. The orphans in Inkomazi are to be commended for having transcended the mindset of victimhood usually associated with their plight, and for reaching out to their less fortunate neighbours.
