Kopano Lerato reports on AIDS Day celebrations, Archdiocese of Pretoria
The local Catholic Priest volunteered to adopt a family for Christmas and he was introduced to the family and they were delighted. We received money for centre renovations and school uniforms in December towards closing time. Centre renovations will be done now in December, school uniforms in January.
World AIDS Day Event
On the 1st December we had a youth support group to celebrate world AIDS day. 68 children attended the celebration and different motivational speakers and nearby NGO`s were invited, the social worker explained the theme of the day and highlighted the total number of people who are living with the HI virus.
One of the motivational speakers educated the youth about HIV/AIDS prevention. He also disclosed his HIV status and told the youth that he has been living with the virus for 6yrs. He encouraged abstinence and support to those who are HIV positive. He also led a candle lighting to remember those who have died and those who live with HIV virus.
The Program Manager who is currently studying social work explained 16 days of activism against women and children abuse and explained different types of abuse and that we must report any abuse. During that day we had fun run holding our banner with the message of “WORKING TOGETHER FOR HIV/AIDS FREE GENERATION” and supporting each other.
Distributions of utensils
During the month of October SACBC gave the program once off funding to buy kitchen utensils for the households and the Office and the Global Fund donated food parcels for Christmas. 50 families were provided with utensils and mattresses, and 84 households with food parcels.
During the past 6 months the Project received once off funding from SACBC and that brought a difference into the lives of the OVC. We really want to acknowledge your support, not only the financial support, but the advisory support as well. Thank you very much and we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
