Fr Stan Brennan, OFM, St Francis Care Centre, Boksburg, Gauteng
The SACBC AIDS Office and the St Francis Care Centre, Boksburg, Archdiocese of Johannesburg, mourn the death of founder Fr Stan Brennan, OFM, a legend in his lifetime for his outreach to the sick and marginalised people of society.
He opened St Francis Care Centre in Boksburg in the 1990s as a hospice for people living with AIDS, and had to endure the hostility of neighbours who did not want people with AIDS in their suburb.
The hospice of St Francis Care Centre was moved to its current location, and grew to include a home for children infected with HIV and affected by AIDS, and ,later on, a treatment centre providing ARVs for people qualifying for treatment.
The Japanese Government recently bestowed the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays on Fr Stan for his contribution to health care.
