Farewell and Thanks!
Farewell and thanks for a wonderful collaboration over the past ten years! Dr Ruth Stark is retiring from Catholic Relief Services after a ten year stint in South Africa, first as country director and subsequently as senior technical advisor to the PEPFAR-funded treatment programme of the SACBC AIDS Office. Dr Stark’s contribution to the SACBC programme was noted at the final meeting of the SACBC AIDS Office/Catholic Relief Services team on 17th May 2013 at Khanya House in Pretoria. On behalf of the bishops, Sr Hermenegild Makoro, Secretary General, and Bishop Jose Luis de Ponce Leon, liaison bishop for AIDS, thanked Dr Stark for her commitment to various SACBC agencies, in particular the AIDS Office.
Karel Zelenka, outgoing CRS country director, will be leaving South Africa for Madagascar, and Davor Dakovic, currently working in Botswana, will return to South Africa to take over the Sandton office of CRS in the next few weeks.
Catholic Relief Services has been present in South Africa since 2000, and has supported the Church’s response to AIDS in South Africa, Swaziland and Botswana through its small project grant, and has partnered the SACBC Office since 2004 in the PEPFAR programme which saw more than 45 000 people initiated on ARV treatment and the support of over 30 000 children made vulnerable by AIDS.
