Children receive antiretroviral treatment in the Kurisanani programme, Diocese of Tzaneen

Kurisanani OVC project in the Diocese of Tzaneen reported on some of its activities in February

• COLLABORATION WITH SCHOOLS, CHURCHES AND OTHER COMMUNITY STRUCTURES:
We run the project in five parishes in the diocese of Tzaneen: Phalaborwa, Tzaneen, Olifants River, Ofcolaco and Malamulele. All of the parish teams are in contact with the local schools that the OVC attend and often children are referred to the project by the school staff. The parish teams also work with staff at the local clinics, hospitals, SAPS, indunas, local counsellors, social workers, local churches and PPC/LPC.

• CHILD PROTECTION:
Birth certificate application: we assisted some of our children in this service during this reporting period.
ID application: We assisted some of the OVC in applying for ID books, by accompanying them to Home Affairs and with transport.
Prevention/intervention: abuse/neglect: we had child abuse awareness sessions.

• HEALTHCARE REFERRALS:
Referral for Immunization: some of the parishes referred children to the clinic for immunization and also encouraged the mothers not to miss any appointment for the safety of their children.
Treatment when sick: We assisted some of the OVC with toiletries. We also accompanied some of the OVC with health problems to the clinic and to the hospital.

• HEALTHCARE – ACCESS TO ARV:
Adherence support: all our children on treatment (ART) were visited in their respective homes to see that they taking their treatment according to the doctors’ instructions and also to give them and their guardians support.
